The polysynth pioneer
An original tech startup success story, the Prophet-5 set the template for polyphonic analog synths for decades to come.
Before founding Sequential Circuits in 1974 now-legendary instrument designer Dave Smith had spent a number of years building sequencers and programmers for synthesizers at his San Jose home. At that time, synthesizers were unpredictable beasts requiring careful tweaking and patching to create sounds.
When Smith began working with the novel technology of microprocessors, he saw an opportunity; could a synthesizer store settings for users to quickly recall their favorite sounds? When no one else stepped up to the mark, Smith and Sequential took it upon themselves to make it happen: in 1977, the Prophet-5 was born.

Sound sources
Before Prophet-5 V’s quick-fire sound design comes into play, it already delivers irresistible character thanks to its oscillators. Meticulously modeled on the Rev 2’s sought-after SSM chips, these VCOs provide a blend of 3 waveforms alongside a noise generator for a beautifully rich, buttery sound - and don’t forget the notoriously edgy hard-sync.

Poly Mod
One of the most crucial elements to the original Prophet-5’s unique sounds. This dedicated section creates immediate modulation routings from the Filter Envelope and OSC 2’s frequency to a number of locations, creating curious movements and wild detuned warbles that respond to your input in real-time.

LFO
An LFO triple-threat, conveniently arranged to offer 3 waveshapes and a number of one-touch destinations. Create wavy variations, lazer sweeps, or outright analog chaos with just a few clicks.

Filter
The key that unlocks the Prophet’s renowned warmth and bounce, inspired by the Dave Rossum-designed SSM 2040 chip from the Rev 1 & 2 models. Sometimes a no-nonsense resonant low-pass filter is all you need; in this case, it tastefully tames Prophet-5 V’s confident oscillators for perfect plucks, softened stabs, and delicate ambient drones.

Arpeggiator
We broke the rules so you don’t have to. Prophet-5 V has been retrofitted with an easy-to-use arpeggiator for creating those classic arps and dancing melodies without ever having to leave the interface.

Dispersion
What sets an emulation apart from the real deal? For us, the devil is in the details. That’s why we implemented realistic Voice Dispersion into Prophet-5 V’s architecture, reproducing the tiny analog inconsistencies between every voice and parameter for an indistinguishable softsynth experience.
